Activities

Activities in vPlan represent the work you need to perform. You can estimate time on activities to gain insight into the capacity of your resources. Additionally, you can track time on activities, and then analyze and retrospect. In summary, activities are essential for effective planning.

When you have vPlan linked to an ERP system, activities are typically automatically imported into vPlan. This includes manufacturing steps from a production process or pre-calculations from a project.

Tip

To set up and manage your activities in vPlan, see the following articles:

Stages

In vPlan you first create activities in the settings. You can then link these activities to a board. You do this by linking them to a stage.
A stage is a division of your plan board into various (process) steps and can be used in several ways. For example, a stage can be a processing step in your production process. Or you can use a stage per department, room or processing station that you want to plan.

Stages divide your planning board into separate sections to be planned. The more stages you add to your board, the more detailed you can plan.

You often create a stage for each plannable activity. For example, if you have the activities of collecting material, sawing, finishing and assembling, you can divide these into the same number of stages of the same name.

You can also link multiple activities to one of your stages. For example, a 'Production' stage containing the activities:
- Sawing
- Post-processing
- Assembly

You can also choose to add the estimated time of multiple activities in a stage in 1 plan card, or create a separate plan card per activity in the stage. You can set this with the planning board setting 'Split cards per activity'. See this article: Planboard settings.

Wat is the difference between activities and stages?

Simply put, activities represent the work that needs to be performed. Stage organization is a way to arrange these activities into multiple manageable steps.

How do I then plan work across these multiple stages?

When you create a card in the vPlan backlog, you can add activities to this card (with or without time estimates). When you drag the card to your board, the card is divided into multiple cards. A card is created for each activity linked to a stage, allowing you to plan your work in detail for each stage.

Tip
Also read the article Difference between a stage and a status for more information about stages.

But not all my work always goes through the same stages

That's not necessary. vPlan recognizes based on the activities present on your card in which stages cards need to be created.
